4,100 Miles

Experiencing life in Prague & Europe.

Four Months Ago,

I said goodbye to America, boarded a plane at JFK, and traveled 4,000 miles alone to a country I knew nothing about. Little did I know I was about to have the most incredible, life changing, unforgettable, and insane semester of my life.

I don’t really know what to say; it’s too weird to think that December 16 is two days away and that we will all be back in America. I’m not going to make this long because 1) I have to get ready to go out and 2) I don’t want to show up at the farewell party with dried up tears and snot all over. However, these past four months have come and gone in the blink of an eye. I have fallen in love with the most beautiful city in Europe, traveled to places I never thought I would see, did things I never thought I would do, met people I will never forget, and learned more about myself in 16 weeks than I thought possible.

Thank you, NYU Prague, for the most amazing experience and treating us like royalty. If only *real* NYU was as put together as you are. Awkward, but true.

Miluju tě, Praha. See you later.

Love,

Eric

Ummmm

So this still exists? Woops. Way too much has happened in the past, I don’t know, month that I haven’t updated. Basically…

1) On the 27th of October, the ceiling lamp in my bedroom apparently wasn’t put in properly, started falling, almost hit and killed me, and then shattered all over my floor.

2) 45 minutes later, I left for the airport and went to Paris for the weekend. It was beautiful! And the croissants and baguettes were to die for.

3) I came back on the 30th of October in time for Halloween. No words can describe what happened that night.

4) BIRTHDAY! I turned 20 on the 4th of November! Woo! Kevin & Carolyne visited!

5) *Insert something about classes and learning*

6) *Insert something about how the only thing we do is go out all the time & travel Europe*

7) Left for Fall Break on the 10th of November. Milan —> Florence —> Rome —> London. Just got back to Prague a few hours ago. Amazing 10 days of fun and relaxation.

8) We leave in 3 weeks from Wednesday.

9) Finals are 5 minutes away & it’s crazy.

10) The next 3 weeks will be insane in the best ways possible.

Can’t believe the most incredible semester is coming to an end so soon. Hard to think about how fast time is going.

Need to get everything ready for classes this week. Hope everyone is doing well! x

Prominte!

I’ve literally been the worst at this whole blogging thing. Gaaaahhh.

I don’t know where to begin; too many things have happened to even keep up. Here’s a brief overview:

Krakow: an amazing, eye-opening, surreal experience. I will never forget that weekend.

Budapest: gorgeous; I think it’s just a bigger and grittier version of Prague. It was a good weekend, even though I was insanely sick and loaded up on antibiotics and other meds. Yum.

And Amsterdam…people never talk about how beautiful it is. Well let me just say, it is BEAUTIFUL. It was a bit sleezy and grimey at night, but walking along the streets and canals during the day was really nice. The buildings and cobblestone streets reminded me of the West Village.

It’s been a little over a month since we’ve been in Prague and it’s hard to believe that it’s already October 9th/10th in 10 minutes. There hasn’t been a trip that wasn’t a success; every weekend has been incredible. Not traveling until Paris, which is Halloweekend, and I’m so ecstatic about being in Prague for a few weeks. It’s still the best, hands down.

Family arrived yesterday morning when I was in Amsterdam and they are here until Thursday! Couldn’t be happier. It’s refreshing and amazing having them here.

Exhausted…time for bed. Will post again this month. Promise.

xx

Ahoj!

Hiiiiiii! I have been so busy with classes and Praha/European life for the past couple of weeks, which is why I haven’t updated in a while. But because it is a gloomy, rainy Sunday (which, might I add, are much more enjoyable over here), it’s the perfect time to update!

TONS of things have happened in the past two weeks, let’s see…

Classes started! I’m taking Marketing, Czech Art & Architecture, & Civil Resistance in Central & Eastern Europe Reflected in: Literature, Art, and Film (long title, I know). I’m only taking 12 credits this semester since 1) I’m in Europe, and 2) I have been taking 18 since freshmen year so might as well not make myself crazy over here. Classes are good so far! I only have class Tuesdays-Thursdays so I can’t complain. There’s a lot of reading for all of the classes, but I really don’t mind doing it since it doesn’t feel like work. Everything here just doesn’t feel real, it’s so surreal to the point that if I have to write an essay (which I was just doing before I started this), it’s more fun than annoying. My professors are awesome; they’re really chill, very smart, and understanding about us being here and wanting to travel, etc. One of my professors was the official student spokesperson for the Velvet Revolution in 1989 - this was the non-violent revolution that ended Communism - so it’s amazing having her teach us and hearing about her experiences. Having professors who have so many incredible life experiences makes going to class not too painful. NYU has been treating us extremely well; it’s very nice.

Last weekend, I went to Berlin! I had no expectations going into it so I was just looking forward to a nice, cool weekend exploring a new city. Berlin was absolutely incredible. I was blown away the entire time. From the architecture, to the history, to the Holocaust Memorial, to the Wall, to the free 4 hour tour - everything was amazing. The people were extremely nice (and way more attractive than the Czechs) and spoke perfect English. The shopping was also great. It was just the perfect weekend. However, it was weird - I didn’t feel like I was in another country. It felt a lot like America which was nice since Prague is just so…not anything like home.

We took an early bus on Friday morning that got us into Berlin around 13:00 (1pm). It’s only a 4.5 hour bus ride, but it ended up being a little more than 5 hours due to weather. When we got to Berlin, we took a cab to our hostel, threw our stuff down, and then just hit the town. We were starving so obviously food was the only thing we wanted. So of course, we hit up California Burrito. Now I know what you’re thinking: “They’re in GERMANY, why are they eating BURRITOS?” Well, let me tell you why: because they looked SO GOOD and in Prague they have German-like food so might as well just eat something that we can’t get there. After lunch, we started walking. We had no idea where we were going or what we wanted to do, but we did know that we wanted to see as much as possible. Our first day we walked around 6 hours, got dinner, and then crashed. The next morning we woke up bright and early and went on a free 4 hour walking tour that we were a little skeptical about, but it was absolutely amazing. Our tour guide was awesome and took us everywhere. After the tour, we walked another 5 or 6 hours to see more things. Oh, and we got crepes. So. Good. Banana Nutella mmmnomnomnom. Anyway, We literally saw EVERYTHING. I don’t know what more we could have seen or done. The things we did in roughly 2 days is what people probably do in a full week of vacation. I would love to go back someday.

Last time I wrote, I said I was going to Oktoberfest on the 24th. That’s not happening anymore. It just got too complicated with trying to find a way to get back since we were going to do a day trip. I would rather spend the money on another trip than run around a beer festival all day. Sooooo I’m going to Krakow! I am so so so excited. We’re taking an overnight train Thursday night that gets us in at 7am on Friday. It’s a 10 hour train ride so I’m going to die but it will be worth it. We’re planning on going to Auschwitz on Saturday which will be extremely emotional, but unforgettable.

Fall Break: Booked! Leaving for Milan on Thursday, November 10th, going to Florence the 11th to the 14th, Rome until the 16th, and then London until the 20th. Looking forward to it!

All of my trips have officially been booked, except for one last trip the first weekend of December. Trying to think of the perfect place to go for our last trip…Portugal, Romania (it would be epic), Greece, and Belgium have been brought up as options, but of course no decisions have been made. There are so few weekends to do everything we want to!

It’s almost been one month since I’ve been here, but it feels like a lifetime. It’s everything I wanted for a study abroad experience, and much, much, much, more. Picking Prague was definitely the perfect choice since it is completely different from New York in the sense that it’s small and cute and so central to everywhere for traveling purposes. Like I said before, Berlin was really great, but coming back to Prague was so nice. It felt like going back home.

I’ll try to update more. Hope you’re all having great semesters, whether it be in America, Europe, or somewhere else in the world.

xx.

Lazy Sobota

It’s the weekend! After a long and very busy two weeks of Czech language intensives, history lectures, tours, cultural events, and exams, orientation is OVER. The past two weeks have been awesome, but I think we’re all ready to get the semester started. We had to take this mandatory course called Czech in a Global Context. Actually, I completely made the name up - I have no idea what it was called - but besides it being boring and too much information being thrown at us, it was cool getting to know the history of the country we’re living in and learning basic Czech phrases. Gotta figure out the whole credit and grading thing…the communication between Prague and NY is lacking, but that’s not too shocking.

I saw a circusy/acrobaty show on Wednesday night. The first 30 minutes were…interesting. We were kind of just like, um wtf is this/do you have to be European to understand this, but then it got really cool. It’s amazing the things people can do with their bodies and how strong they are. Their bodies were siiiiick.

Didn’t do too much this week at night other than that since we had to get up early every morning for language class (9:30-12:30) and then history lecture (2:00-4:30). The teacher I had for Czech was awesome; I would take the class this semester if he was teaching, but unfortunately he doesn’t teach at NYU.

Prague is an incredible city. We all love walking around and finding new places and things to do. Sure, the people aren’t that nice (actually…they’re pretty mean) but it’s at the point where we just laugh it off and joke about it. Yesterday after our “final exams” we went on a boat cruise along the river which was a lot of fun and a good start to the weekend. NYU has been treating us extremely well.

Here are trips that are already booked:

September 9th to 11th: Berlin

*September 22nd to 23rd: Oktoberfest (Munich)

September 30th to October 2nd: Budapest

October 6th to 8th: Amsterdam

*Oktoberfest plans are a bit wonky at the moment, but it’s obviously going to happen.

Need to plan Paris & London, as well as fall break. Think I’m gonna go to Italy (Milan & Florence) for the first half of break and then Tel Aviv for the second half…thoughts?

Going to rest a bit, maybe change around my class schedule, clean, be lazy, and then maybe go out later. Did I mention pivo (beer) is cheaper than water? Well, it is.

Will post again soon. x

I’m definitely not good at writing about my life/what I’ve been doing. It’s not an easy thing to do.

It’s hard to believe how much has happened in this first week…feels like a lifetime. From lectures, to film screenings, to trying new food, to pub crawling - we have definitely been kept busy. At first I was a bit intimidated by the Czechs since they were very cold and into themselves, but now it’s just pretty funny and expected. I took the tram for the first time today with the dorm since we had to go to the opposite side of the city to see a movie…I’m probably going to stick with the metro.

A bunch of us went on a pub crawl last night around the city. It was sick. We all had a crazy fun time and it definitely showed us how amazing the semester is going to be. I’m extremely happy with the friends I’ve made so far; we have only known each other for a few days, yet we feel so comfortable around one another.

I went on a tour today of Vysehrad - a castle/fortress in the city. It was unbelievable; the history goes back thousands of years and the architecture, landscaping, and city views are breathtaking.

I would write more but it’s late and I’m beyond exhausted. Looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow…should probably do some laundry and go shopping for more necessities. It’s going to be a looooonnngggg and busy week, so gotta enjoy the free time while it lasts.

My thoughts are with everyone affected by the hurricane. Stay safe. x.

Dobre den! (I think that’s right?)

I have been awful at keeping up with this blog, but I’ll try to post at least 2-3 times a week. I moved into the dorm yesterday! My address: Slezska 60. It’s in Praha 2, a residential area of the city and about a 10-15 minute metro ride to the center, or a 25-30 minute walk. I’m in a single within a suite (triple across the hall). Two of my suite mates are from Duke and basically 80% of this program is Duke students. And Williams. And BC. And Wake Forest. And Tufts. And Colby. And Amherst. And every school you can think of. There are obviously NYU students, but it feels like it is dominated more by other colleges. Bottom line: it is a VERY different scene from NYU in the city. But I like it a lot - it’s a great change and everyone is awesome.

So basically we have orientation for 2 weeks. The schedule is a bit absurd. Lectures and lectures and more lectures and then 3 hour Czech language intensives and then film screenings and other events and then TWO EXAMS. Jokes. It’s also disgustingly hot and there’s no AC anywhere except Tesco (<3) so we’re all sweaty messes. Definitely ready for the fall.

It’s crazy being here but I’m getting more and more adjusted. A bit culture shocked which is expected. Everything is just so different!

Gotta go to a dorm meeting soon and then who knows what, but I’ll post more soon! x

P.S. Jessie & Veronica: Me and few others got lunch at this place today so I got a burger called “Little Rabbit” (creepiest name ever). I know it’s just a burger and isn’t anything exotic or Czechie, but you said you wanted to know what food looks like so there’s that! I’ll take pictures of goulash and sausage (ew) when I order it. I had schnitzel yesterday and it was rull good.

Ahoj!

Greetings from Prague! My flight was scheduled to leave JFK Saturday evening at 7:40, but didn’t take off until 8:30. It was only 7 hours 21 minutes = went by very fast. Landed in Prague around 9:45 AM, so my body clock was on 3:45 AM. Beyond exhausted.

Went on a 3 hour walking tour today to stay awake. The architecture is stunning. The history is incredible. It’s just a beautiful place. Still hard to believe I’m actually here - don’t think it’s going to hit me for a while. Many things to get used to since it’s just so different from the states, but it’s all part of the experience.

Can’t keep my eyes open much longer so gonna head to bed soon.

Until next time…

E

lalalala

Gotta eat some breakfast, run some errands, watch some tv, put some stuff away, and then HEAD TO THE AIRPORT BECAUSE I’M GOING TO PRAGUE TODAY WUDDDDUPPPP
